Election 2016 CPP will form next government – acting youth leader

In the wide-ranging interview to discuss the party’s readiness and youth policy direction ahead of the 2016 election, he said the spirit of youth, which propelled Dr Kwame Nkrumah to win power in 1957 is back and that he is in doubt the party will win the presidency.

The Acting National Youth Organizer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Fafafe Agbodzi-Sewornu, has predicted a landslide victory for the party in the 2016 election.

A confident-sounding Agbodzi-Sewornu, however, shied away from predicting the victory margin in an interview with Pulse.com.gh.

In the wide-ranging interview to discuss the party’s readiness and youth policy direction ahead of the 2016 election, he said the spirit of youth, which propelled Dr Kwame Nkrumah to win power in 1957 is back and that he is in doubt the party will win the presidency.

“I can tell you that the spirit is being reincarnated in the contemporary youth because CPP had been down, CPP at some point was voiceless, CPP at a point in time we could not be recognised as a true CPP but now, you could see that it was the same youth that started steadily and radically and revolutionary. So you can see that the ambiance or the atmosphere is beginning to redefine what the past CPP stands for,” he said.

Agbodzi-Serwornu said the party’s campaign message is resonating with the youth and that the party is satisfied with the feedback so far.

Ghana heads to the polls on December 7 in what analysts have said is a test of the country’s fragile democracy.

President John Mahama is facing a re-election bid with at least seven political parties including the CPP.

CPP’s flagbearer, Ivor Greenstreet, is wooing voters with a promise to raise $300 billion from almond fruit cultivation.

He said at an Institute of Economic Affairs encounter with political parties that two million youth will be mobilised to plant the tropical tree.

-Agenda 2 million votes-

Abgodzi-Sewornu says the youth league has drafted a strategy to garner votes of two million young voters.

“We have put structures in place to ensure that pull at least, per our structures… if nothing at all the youth can pull exclusively two million votes for the CPP this time.”

He said the party will create a youth ministry, unlike the current ministry which has the sports ministry attached to it.

He noted that this youth ministry will represent the interest and voice of the youth at cabinet.

Explaining further, Agbodzi-Sewornu noted said youth ministry will liaise with other ministry’s to coordinate all youth policies and strategies to create jobs.

He decried the current system where multiple agencies are established to create jobs for the youth.
