Dzorgbenuku will not improve Nduom's fortunes - Dr Opoku

The presidential candidate on Thursday, August 4, announced Ms Dzorgbenuku, an entrepreneur and social activist, as his running mate.

Dr Nduom’s choice of Brigitte Dzorgbenuku as running mate, will not improve his fortunes of becoming the next president of Ghana according to a political communication expert, Dr Eric Opoku

Speaking to Accra-based Class FM minutes after the announcement, founding member of the PPP, Mike Eghan, stated that the running mate will improve the affluence of the party in the December election.

“The calibre of person that she is, with her knowledge and experience in dealing with people, we think we can make inroads not only in the Volta Region but throughout Ghana. She has a message, she has a style, and she has a personality to attract people to be part of what we are trying to do in Ghana …” he said. However, according to Dr Opoku the achievements of the former beauty queens will not propel votes for the PPP during the elections.

You ought to have contributed largely to larger causes in terms of our own politics and all of that. It takes a long time for people to accept you and I think that what she has done in view of her own private life and work is not enough. So, she being a person who is not corrupt, I don’t think is enough to bring a lot of strength to add to Papa Kwesi Nduom’s position as the flagbearer,” he said.

Background

The Presidential candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom has chosen a former Miss Ghana, Brigitte Dzorgbenuku as running mate.

Dr Nduom earlier hinted that his running mate will be female. He believed his choice will give meaning to an “all inclusive” and “Ghana first agenda”.

This is the second time in a row Dr Nduom is choosing a female running mate for general elections. In 2012 he chose a former GBC Director General Eva Lokko for a running mate.

Dzorgbenuku was presented to the party delegates on Thursday at its headquarters in Accra.

Dzorgbenuku won the Miss Ghana pageant in 1990. Even though she is a member of pressure group Occupy Ghana, she cannot be described as one who is actively involved in politics.

Brigitte Dzorgbenuku is the manager of the Barclays Clubhouse in Accra. She also runs a non-profit organisation Mentoring Women Ghana (MWG).

Prior to this she served as the General Manager of Aviation Social Centre, a fitness and recreational centre in Accra, for twelve years and revolutionalised the fitness and training regime for Ghanaians.
