Election 2016 EC accepts CPP's 50k filing fee

The Nkrumahist party failed to meet the 12:00 pm deadline set by the commission for the submission of filing fees for presidential and parliamentary nominees.

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) is still in the run towards becoming the next party to govern the country after the Electoral Commission (EC) accepted its filing fee despite failing to meet the 12 o'clock deadline.

Chairman of the party arrived at the EC’s office a minute to the deadline without the banker’s draft to as proof of payment.

The EC began accepted the filing fees of both presidential and parliamentary aspirants following a court ruling dismissing an interlocutory injunction brought against it by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

The PPP  was in court to challenge the "exorbitant" nomination fees of GHS 50,000 for presidential aspirants and GHS 10,000 for parliamentary nominees.

The EC in a statement earlier asked that all political nominees submit a banker’s draft which will cover their filing fee.

“All nominated candidates for the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections are hereby advised to submit the banker’s draft in respect of their filing fees to the Electoral Commission not later than 12:00 noon on Monday, October 10, 2016,” a statement signed by the EC’s Head of Communications, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu indicated.
