Some Ghanaians have applauded the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) for the disqualification of twelve presidential aspirants from contesting the presidency during the December 7 polls.

The EC on Monday, October 10 cut short the dreams of 12 presidential hopefuls citing fraudulent signatures, the absence of required number signatures, improper filing of nomination forms amongst others as the reason for their disqualification.

Speaking to some Ghanaians on the streets of Accra, one person said this was a way of sieving the qualified ones from those who only perform abysmally during elections.

“I think what the EC has done is a step in the right direction because those presidential aspirants who have been disqualified come every four years to canvas for votes especially Dr. Nduom but he ends up gaining the least votes. If they are now out of the race, it is to the advantage of the other parties who have the potential to gunner more votes, so to me what Madam Charlotte Osei has done is good.”

Another said: “I think she did the right thing. The disqualified nominees can go to court if they want to. If you want to be a leader then you should do the right thing because as a leader you would expect your followers to do the right thing. I think she’s doing her job and it’s cool. I urge her to continue to do her job.”

However another person urged the disgruntled parties to resort to the law courts for redress.

“I think the disqualified aspirants should go to court because what the EC has done is not understandable. I see the EC working in favour of some people so she’s doing everything possible to enable her favourite gain an upper hand over the other contestants. Those who have been dropped should go to court.”

The disqualified presidential nominees include: the All People’s Congress’s Hassan Ayariga; Dr Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr Agyenim Boateng of the United Front Party (UFP), Kofi Akpaloo of the Independent People’s Party (IPP), Kwabena Adjei of the Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD), Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).
