Mahama is the best candidate for NDC’s victory in 2020 - Victor Smith

A former High Commissioner of Ghana to the United Kingdom, Victor Smith, said he was certain that former President Mahama will lead the NDC to victory in 2020 if he is voted as Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Former President John Mahama

In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, he said there is no better candidate than former President Mahama.

He was certain that former President Mahama will lead the NDC to victory in 2020 if he is voted as Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“If NDC wants to win 2020, there is no better candidate than John Mahama. If we want to just try 2020, then we can afford to put forth a new candidate so if he doesn’t win, he can be advertised for the future. But if we want 2020, what we need to do is to present him [John Mahama].”

Victor Smith added that the party must resolve all its internal issues before election 2020.

He said the internal wrangling was the cause of the NDC defeat in election 2016.

“Mahama did so well in delivering the deliverables in terms of development of our country. However in terms of our own party, there was the bickering, there was the anger in our party which cost us. If we want to win elections we should put John, but correct the mistakes. If we [the NDC] want to be the ones in the driving seat in 2020, our best bet is the one we put out there already. He [Mahama] did so well but there were some hiccups and that probably led to us losing the elections.”

This is not the first time a party big-wig has made a call for a return of former President Mahama in election 2020.

The NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu , Samuel Okudzeto, and the National Organiser for the NDC, Kofi Adams and many others have made a similar call.

Meanwhile, other names such as the Member of Parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo Alban Babgin and a former Minister for Trade and Industry Ekow Spio Garbrah have been tipped to contest in the presidential primaries of the party.
