Voters' Register: All minors are now mature - Asiedu Nketia

"At least the one that is existing now, we know under the passage of time the minors there have attained maturity age by which they are qualified to register."

The National Democratic Congress NDC has strongly rejected claims by the New Patriotic Party NPP that, there are foreigners in the voters' register.

"Unless somebody tells me that there is a foreigner on our national roll and is able to prove it, I'm entitled to believe that there is no foreigner on our national roll" NDC general secretary said.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia was speaking on Citi fm where he insisted the voters' register is the most credible since independence.

The NPP in a presentation by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia sought to prove among others that over 76,000 Togolese are in the register. The party wants the support of other political parties in an attempt to make the EC prepare a new register.

Asiedu Nketia challenged the NPP to go by the rules outlined in CI 72 to challenge the citizenship of a registrant, adding that the citizenship of a person cannot be proved or disproved at a press conference

"If the NPP has those names as they claim to have, they should present them and let us establish the various review committees as the law provides in the various districts they are alleging.

"The review committee will now hear the cases one by one and will determine which name ought to be on the register and which name out not to be on the register. That should not be an occasion for the compilation of a new voters' register." He said

Minors are of age

He also argued that all minors who have their names in the register are now of age and getting a new one will mean adding more minors.

"If you open the register today there will be new minors under eighteen who will be pushed by the same motivation that push all the political parties who wanted to get advantage over the other parties in their own stronghold to put new minors on the register.

"So you are going to have a worse register than the one that is existing. At least the one that is existing now, we know under the passage of time the minors there have attained maturity age by which they are qualified to register."

An Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting has been  scheduled for Friday to deliberate on matter.
