Mac Manu goofed - Political scientist

The campaign manager of the New Patriotic Party Peter Mac Manu told party supporters in the Western Region that the party could declare its own results in the general elections.

According to Dr Gyampo, such comments could only spark chaos and violence considering the country is already tense.

The campaign manager of the New Patriotic Party Peter Mac Manu told party supporters in the Western Region that the party could declare its own results in the general elections.

“...The IGP cannot stop us. Whether you are the Electoral Commission, whether you are a police or security officer, whether you are a polling agent, whether you are a chief, you cannot stop NPP from declaring results,” he said.

But Political scientist Dr. Gyampo said such comments are not what Ghanaian voters need but rather what the party has in terms of alternative solutions to some challenges facing the country.

“I think this is not a politically appropriate statement to come from a seasoned and one of the level-headed politicians we have in Ghana. The NPP is seeking for power in 2016 and must be heard articulating a message that does not appeal only to its core supporters who cannot on their own win power for the party.

“So telling us you could call or hold election results is not what the 5-10 percent electoral key makers and floating voters want to hear. They want to know about your readiness to govern and this is always displayed when one pontificates and exposes the challenges confronting us now and show an alternative way for it,”  hetold Accra-based TV3.

Meanwhile the deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho says the NPP will not be allowed to declare election results as the Electoral Commission is the only constitutionally mandated body to do so.
