The seat became vacant following the sudden death of the Member of Parliament for the Abuakwa North constituency Joseph Boakye Danquah Adu, on February 9, 2016.
The by-election will be held in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution as amended.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) opted out of the election. According to the NDC, the circumstances surrounding the MP’s “gruesome murder that brought the nation to a standstill” make it impossible for it to contest.
The NPP’s Gifty Twum Ampofo is being challenged by Samuel Frimpong of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) and the United People’s Party’s Isaac Kwarteng.
A local reporter in the constituency told Pulse.com.gh that residents are waiting for the polls to open. ,Meanwhile the Electoral Commission officials says they have taken receipt of all electoral materials and are ready for the polls.
