A group in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) calling itself Concerned NDC youth of Akatsi South Constituency in the Volta region has issued a strong warning to the party's vetting Committee not to succumb to pressure to disqualify any candidate contesting in the parliamentary primaries.

According to the group, the constituency has suffered from the lack of transparency in electing a parliamentary candidate which has affected the party’s popularity over the years.

In a statement jointly signed by its Public Relations Officer, Bright Nudokpo, Francis Bedzo, Convenor and Selormey Attivor, Organizer, it said "We are urging the National, Regional and Constituency executives to give a fair playing ground to the parliamentary aspirants and give the chance to the electorates to make their own informed choice. Prior to the picking of nomination forms and filing, we have heard machinations to thwart efforts of other aspirants from the powers that be to contest the incumbent MP. We take serious exception to these plans. We vehemently oppose any attempt to impose a candidate on the constituency as this may jeopardise the “Operation Gap One Million Votes” and result in a poor performance for the NDC in the 2016 general elections."

Only two aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest in the November 7 primaries of the party. The incumbent MP, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor and his fellow contestant Mr Prince Kassim Alubankudi are the only contestant in the race for the Akatsi South NDC primaries.
"We have credible information that on the sidelines of a Regional meeting about 3 weeks ago, the Regional Chairman and the Constituency Chairman were overheard plotting to disqualify one candidate. This attempt must stop immediately. No one should put needless pressure on the committee to disqualify anybody. If any mistake is made by disqualifying any of the aspirants, then the party will have itself to blame in the 2016 elections," the statement added.
