Latest CDD survey accuses NDC of vote buying

According to the study, 51% of Ghanaians surveyed believe the John Mahama-led government has been buying vote followed closely by Nana Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party with 32%.

Six in 10 Ghanaians believe political parties are engaged in vote buying, the survey added.

The study noted that 60 % people believe that political parties and candidates often or always engage in vote buying during elections. But a little over a quarter do not share this opinion.

Other highlights of the survey include:

  • Close to half of adult Ghanaians say they will refuse money from a candidate in exchange for the votes and cast their ballot for their preferred candidate.
  • Another 4 in 10 Ghanaian say they will take the money but still vote for their preferred candidate.
  • Only five said their vote can be bought.
  • Third of respondents said other people in their community will take the money offered for their vote but that it won't influence their vote preference.
  • A little over a third also say other people in the community will refuse the money and vote for their preferred candidate as well.
  • And nearly four in 10 responded saying they don't know how other people in their community will react when offered money for their vote.

The release of the survey comes on the heels of allegations of vote buying and sharing of goodies by the New Patriotic Party and the Ghana Integrity Initiative against the NDC.

On the kind of gifts people receive in exchange for their votes, the survey said cash topped the kind of things people get to sell their votes. This was followed by food, alcohol and clothing.

The sampled size was 2400 and was randomly selected across the length and breadth of the country.

The latest survey is the most comprehensive report on vote buying in the country.

The survey was conducted based on the news headlines dominating at the time of the study. The most discussed headline the survey found related to the work of the Electoral Commission (EC).

A majority of Ghanaians, 63%, believed the EC is neutral in the performance of its duties. However, 50% of Ghanaians believe the EC will not declare the right results.

In addition, a third believe that the EC takes decision meant to favour a particular political party.
