17 presidential nominees file nomination forms

The forerunners in this year's election, president John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress and Nana Akufo Addo of the New Patriotic Party, both submitted their nomination forms on Thursday.

The 17 include two independent candidates -- Jacob Osei Yeboah and Kwame Asiedu Walter.

Akufo Addo was the first to submit his form among all the flagbearers. The symbolism of submitting first, he said, will let him win the December vote.

“Since I’m the first to file my forms, by God’s grace I will be the first person you’ll declare [winner],” Nana Addo told EC Chair Mrs Charlotte Osei while submitting his forms on Thursday, September 29, 2016.

Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur submitted president John Mahama’s nomination forms. President Mahama is seeking a second term after seeing off the remaining term of the late Prof. Evans Atta Mills and securing his own 4-year mandate in 2012.

The vice president was accompanied to the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters by the NDC General Secretary; Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Deputy General Secretary; Koku Anyidoho, Greater Accra Regional Chairman; Ade Coker and other members of the NDC.

"We have officially come to the end of the nomination process for the presidential elections," Chairperson of the commission, Charlotte Osei said at a news conference on Friday.

She said the commission will "vet the forms to make sure they are in compliance with the legal requirement... candidates who have met the legal requirement with their nominations will be accepted which will mean they will be on the ballot form for the December 7 presidential election."

Twenty-three (23) nominees, including seven independent aspirants, had picked forms to run for president.
