The Saltpond Forum is threatening to lead residents of Saltpond in the Central Region to boycott the December vote.

It is accusing the government and past governments of neglect despite being the birthplace of Ghana's struggle for Independence.

President of the group Dr Ransford Gyampo, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, also called on flagbearers to pay attention to "Ghana's political mecca."

“We call on government and indeed all presidential hopefuls to immediately turn their attention to Ghana’s political Mecca. We have been abandoned for far too long and today we are prepared to mobilise the good people of Saltpond to boycott the upcoming general elections in protest against their marginalisation if we do not see any sign of concern from the ruling government and the opposition,” he said.

He also slammed "surreptitious scheme" to relocate the municipal capital to Mankessim because of stalled development.

He described the development as "irresponsible" which does not befit the contribution of Saltpond to the development of Ghana.

“We sensed a gradual grand but surreptitious scheme to relocate the municipal capital to Mankessim simply because of Saltpond’s stalled development. We believe this approach is very irresponsible and a defeating solution to a problem that can easily be tackled to honour the role and contribution of Saltpond towards Ghana’s development.”

Saltpond hubs the country's oldest oil field, the Saltpond Offshore Producing Company Limited.

It is a major market centre for the Mfantsiman Municipality.

Paa Grant, the founder of Ghana's first political party, United Gold Coast Convention, hails from Saltpond.

Other prominent people from Saltpond include;  Professor Kwesi Dickson, who was a notable Ghanaian academic, theologian, and author, Sir Kobina Arku Korsah, a notable Chief Justice, writer Ama Ata Aidoo and Prof F.K. A. Allotey, Renowned Physicist.
