African Christians are suffering from ‘Acquired Immune Spirituality Syndrome’

Speaking at the PAV Ansah Memorial Lecture in Accra on the theme: "Good governance, whither Africa?” Prof Lumumba wondered why Christians will go to church and still engage in corrupt acts.

Professor P.L.O Lumumba

Kenyan law professor and Pan-Africanist, P.L.O Lumumba has taken a swipe at African Christians as he says they are suffering from “Acquired Immune Spirituality Syndrome”.

According to him, even pastors instead of preaching against corruption, change their summons to suit and please corrupt officials in their churches in order not to lose them.

“We vilify little thieves in our villages and defy the big thieves. Even in places of worship, when a thief enters the church, the pastor poses for a minute and the summon changes appropriately… Even our churches are sick,” he fumed.

“I was saying the day before yesterday that all of us will go to churches and most in temples because ‘I am a Christian’.  I used the church example. We are all suffering from what I call Acquired Immune Spirituality Syndrome. And what we do every Sunday and Saturday is that we go to church to acquire our spiritual anti-retroviral. The question is, are they effective? Because we steal for six days and repent on the seventh day. That is not acceptable,” Prof Lumumba added.

He indicated that the only thing Africans have to do in order for the continent to develop, is to change their attitudes.
