President John Dramani Mahama has applauded Ghanaian journalists for promoting national interest through their reportages.

“Ghana's democracy is stronger because of journalists reporting & promoting national interest,” he said this at the 20th Ghana Journalist Awards held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra on Saturday.

The ceremony which was under the theme, saw the president grace the occasion as the special guest of honour.

Mr. Mahama however advised journalists to be more circumspect in their reportages in order not to give bad impressions about the country to the outside world.

“We have to factor in new/social media and the latitude it gives every Ghanaian to report positively or negatively… In our reportage, we must remember that we are no longer reporting just for a local audience but a global audience,” he said.

“We need to introduce better regulation for the broadcast media to improve our national discourse," the president added.

In all, twenty-six Ghanaian journalists who wrote stories that made good use of language and presentation received honours.
