44 die on road during election period

According to the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), 100 accidents were recorded during the said period involving over 157 vehicles. While the death toll from stands at 44, a total of 167 people also sustained varying degrees of injuries in these accidents.

Forty-four people died in road accidents between in the three-day period between December 7 and December 10, 2016.

The period saw the election and declaration of Ghana’s much awaited general elections.

According to the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), 100 accidents were recorded during the said period involving over 157 vehicles.

While the death toll from stands at 44, a total of 167 people also sustained varying degrees of injuries in these accidents.

Yaw Asiedu, the Central Regional director of elections of the National Democratic Congress, died in a road accident on his way to the party's headquarters in Accra to deliver election materials, albeit a few days after the specified period.

According to the NRSC’s own figures, the number of road accidents have increased this year compared to figures from the last.

There were scenes of wild jubilation across the country as the chairperson of the Electoral Commission declared Nana Akufo-Addo as the winner of the presidential elections.

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party were engaged in dangerous driving and loud honking while many thronged to the streets to sing and dance after the results were announced.
