Community gets electricity after 58 years

Kwawkrom has finally been connected to the national grid after 58 years

Kwawkrom, a farming community in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai of the Western Region, has after almost 58 years of waiting, been connected to the national electricity grid.

The project which was solely funded by the Chirano Gold Mines Limited (CGML) at the cost of GHC 260, 478, 34 was inaugurated by the management team and the Community Consultative Committee (CCC) of the mine.

Mr Ken Norris, General Manager and Vice President of the company said the extension of electricity to Kwawkrom was also in line with the Corporate Social Responsibility of the company.

He gave the assurance that CGML would continue to support deprived communities in its catchment area.

“We expect small and micro businesses to spring up while many employees living outside the area are likely to take up residence in the community,” he added.

Nana Frimpong Manso, Chairman of the CCC of Chirano Mines thanked the management for the gesture as it would impact positively on the community.

He said  his team would continue to work closely with management of the mine to transform the fortunes of the residents within the catchment area of the mine.

Mr. Placid Kannae, a Deputy Coordinating Director of the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District Assembly lauded the initiatives by private organisations like Chirano to alleviate the development burden on the district assemblies.
