President of policy think tank, IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe has said that comments by the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr that the demonstration by the Let My Vote Count Alliance to drum home the need for a new voters register was needless is shameful.

Several protesters were injured after police tear-gassed the demonstrators when they reportedly veered off the approved route towards the Electoral Commission of Ghana. Some were brutalised while others were arrested.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show,  on Thursday, Mr Pratt stated that the Electoral Commission (EC) has already taken the purpose for which the demonstration was embarked on into consideration after some political parties had petitioned the commission.

“Some political parties have already petitioned the EC and the EC has urged them to be patient as they scrutinize the issue. What is the need for that demo if the petition had already been sent to EC. I think it was needless,” he said.

In a rebuttal, Mr Cudjoe on Citi FM’s  on Saturday said the demonstration was to put pressure on the EC and any comment that seem to suggest that the demonstration was needless is shameful.

“I have heard some shameful comments from a senior journalist to that effect. That matter indeed had been tabled before the EC. I will think that clearly speaking, the demonstrators were adding more pressure. Don’t forget that we have an EC that has been quite disrespectful. After the law court had ruled that certain reforms should be kicked in, it took so many months even before these matters were being adhered to at all,” he said
