Months after a sermon by Pastor Enoch Adeboye was posted YouTube, its contents has gone viral and stirred debate about the ‘role’ of wives.
The video shows the preacher advising young men and women in the congregation on who they should choose as partners. It is unclear when the sermon was first given but a video from May 2015 has been seen by Pulse News.
Pastor Adeboye is seen advising the young men in the congregation not to marry girls who are lazy, not prayerful and those who cannot cook.
“Any girl who cannot pray for one hour non-stop; don’t marry her...Don’t marry a girl who is lazy. If she is lazy as a girl, how will she cope when she is married and has children? Don’t marry a girl who cannot cook” – the pastor said accompanied by cheers from the congregation.
The video shows some of the young people writing down ‘the words of wisdom’ being dished out by the millionaire preacher; who also advised them to buy copies of the sermon to listen to later.
He urged the young ladies in the congregation not to marry men who did not have jobs or not financially stable.
This has generated controversy on social media among Nigerians about the role of women in modern society including many feminists and non-religious people who have described his comments sexist and backward.
Who is Pastor Adeboye?
The former lecturer of mathematics is the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and has been full time preaching since the 1980s. He is among Nigeria’s many mega millionaire preachers and is reported to have bought a second private jet (worth 65 million) last year.
Despite many in Nigeria reeling from economic hardships, he put out a statement reminding his followers about the dangers of not paying their tithes. Enoch Adeboye is revered in a highly religious country such as Nigeria and open criticism of pastors is swiftly condemned.
