News of an increase in electricity and water tariffs has confused and angered Ghanians. Today the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced electricity tariffs  will be increased by 59.2 % , while water prices will go up by 67.2 % for residential consumers.  The changes will take effect from December 14 2015.

The increase comes after Volta River Authority, Ghana Grid Company Ltd, Electricity Company, Northern Electricity Distribution Company and the Ghana Water Company proposed tariff increases. The electrical companies wanted an average increase of 128.6 % while the Ghana Water Company wanted a 400.2 % increase in tariffs. After consultation and investigations of the proposals the decision was reached.PURC Director of public relations Nana Yaa Akyempim Jantuah said the Commission had considered the social impact of the increase. She said the increase was largely due to a shift in power sources since 2013, which was 58 % hydro and 42 % thermal in 2013, and is now 27 % hydro and 73 % thermal.
