Children must be educated on the usage of the internet

The Gender Minister mentioned this when the Ministry held national gender dialogue that discussed emerging child protection issues in Ghana.

The Minister of Gender Children and Social Protection Nana Oye Lithur says it is time to educate children on the use of the internet.

She mentioned this when the Ministry held national gender dialogue that discussed emerging child protection issues in Ghana.

She said there is the need for positive steps to address the wrong use of the Internet by children.

At the dialogue there was a consensus that if the issue was not addressed in the near future more children would fall victim to cyber sexual abuse in the years to come.

The panel for the dialogue was made up of a cyber-expert Ms Awo Aidam Amenyah, the Head of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Rev. Mrs Lawrencia Akorlie, Prof. Kofi Awusabo-Asare of the University of Cape Coast, and a representative of children, Ms Victoria Quarnor.

In their discussion they all agreed that all stakeholders had a role to play in making the internet safe for children. They therefore, called on parents, teachers and the entire society to be more sensitive to the needs of children, arguing that children of today were more curious and, therefore, needed to be supported to do the right thing.

The Country Representative of UNICEF, Ms Susan Ndongo, said since the issue of child protection could not be ignored, UNICEF was ready to fund a study which would help in addressing the issue of child protection in the online space.

The AfDB Resident Representative, Mrs Marie-Laure Akin-Olugbade, in a statement, called for concrete steps to help curb child abuse in the society.

She further encouraged that all stakeholders who handle children exercise emotional restraint to help teach the children and help them develop as expected.
