United States Senator, Ted Cruz formally announced his entry into the 2016 US presidential race, centring his debut campaign speech on liberty.

Speaking at Liberty University in Virginia, Cruz described his mission as "reigniting the promise of America" because "for so many Americans the promise of America seems more and more distant".

He further urged millions of "courageous conservatives" to rise up calling on Americans to come together to say: "We demand our liberty."

CNN reports that he made an appeal to cultural conservatives and religious Republicans, saying: "Our rights don't come from man but from God Almighty."

44-year old Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada and has a Cuban father and American mother. Over time in the Senate, he has garnered a reputation for being an uncompromising conservative willing to challenge Democrats as well as his fellow Republicans.

He also railed against President Obama's healthcare reforms known as "Obamacare".

Before his foray into politics, Cruz worked as a high-profile lawyer representing the State of Texas before the Supreme Court and also taught law in Texas.
