The wives of these police officers say they are constantly being threatened and abused verbally by the residents who believe that a police officer was responsible for the death of a commercial motor rider in the area.

Some commercial motorbike transport operators otherwise known as okada riders stormed the Aveyime police station earlier this month after two of their members passed away in an accident in their attempt to escape from the police.

The police were on the streets as part of efforts of clamping down on the activities of okada riders that flout motor and traffic regulations.

The okada drivers in their anger besieged the police station and attempted to force their way through.

They even burnt some car tyres in front of the police station in the process.

The Director-General of Public Affairs of the police in the region, ASP David Eklu has since issued a statement saying that the issue is under investigation.

But the residents are not satisfied with the statement and have threatened to deal with the police officers in the area.

Many of the officers are unable to carry out their duties effectively for fear of their lives, Accra-based Joy FM reports.

For the police officers leaving outside the barracks, their situation is worse considering they have to stay at home all day in order not to be attacked.
