Due to the bad roads that dominate Africa, our continent has the highest rate of traffic accidents.

According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety by World Health Organization(WHO), Africa has the highest number of road accidents, thus the highest death rate.

Africa's death rate is as high as 26.6 annual traffic deaths for every 100,000 citizens, while Europe has the lowest with 9.3.

WHO chief Margaret Chan says, “road traffic fatalities take an unacceptably high toll, particularly on poor people in poor countries.”

Overall, 1.25 million people die from road accidents, with pedestrians accounting for 22 percent of all deaths, motorcyclists making up 23 percent, and cyclists four percent.

Despite this staggering statistics, Chan says it will get better rather than worse.

“We’re moving in the right direction, the report shows that road safety strategies are saving lives. But it also tells us that the pace of change is too slow.”
