Mugabe’s backdoor exit is a shame – AU President

The President of the African Union (A.U.) Alpha Conde described the 93-year old Mugabe, as a “great fighter” and “African hero,” who should have resigned a more honourable manner.

According to the visionguinee news website, Conde said he was happy the political instability in Zimbabwe has been resolved.

“It is a shame that he is leaving through the back door and that he is forsaken by the parliament,” Conde said.

The A.U. president called on the military to ensure that the country is returned to constitutional rule.

Even though Mugabe’s resignation was voluntary, it is believed that he was under pressure to step down.

His resignation letter was read by Zimbabwe’s Speaker of Parliament when the house had met to begin an impeachment process.

Reports suggest that the Members of Parliament (MP) jubilated after the letter was read.

Meanwhile, thousands of Zimbabweans thronged the streets in jubilation as well.

Mugabe has been president of Zimbabwe since the country’s independence from the British in 1980.
