AGI expects little change with arrival of power barge

The Association of Ghana Industries is cautiously optimistic about the Karpower Barge reducing the burden of energy rationing for the industrial sector.

The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has complained about the government's lack of prioritisation of industries in the provision of energy.

The have charged the government to prioritise industry in both the provision and pricing of energy.

The 225 Megawatts power barge arrived in the country last month after a long wait and several arrival date postponements.

AGI Chief Executive Officer, Seth Twum Akwaboah, expressed delight over the final arrival of the barge, but is not overjoyed by the development.

" We are happy that the barge is finally here. But we are mindful of the fact that it is just bringing 225 Megawatts of power on board. That will not completely solve our energy problems."

Akwaboah again charged the government to map out a proper strategy to ensure fuel to run the barge is constantly available.

"The mere presence of the barge is not enough. Proper strategy must be in place to provide fuel for the barge. I can see how that can be a problem for government with the benefit of hindsight."

AGI will not be completely satisfied until the government gets a more lasting solution to the energy crisis.

" Long term measures for us, are more crucial. We must not concentrate solely on the power barge that has come in. The other thermal plants around must also be given the needed attention. Necessary measures must be put in place to ensure [a] more stable and consistent energy supply."
