I am disappointed in Bawumia – Asiedu Nketia

Dr Mahamadu Bawumia alleged over 76, 286 people with same names and pictures are in the voters’ registers of both Ghana and Togo.

General Secretary of NDC, Asiedu Nketia is the only one who has the mandate to issue the presidential forms to a presidential aspirant.

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stated that allegations by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2016 election, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia that over 76, 286 people with same names and pictures are in the voters’ registers of both Ghana and Togo is improper.

“Our investigative team obtained the Togo voters’ register which was publicly displayed prior to the 2015 Togolese elections. Using facial biometric recognition technology, the system has found 76,286 potential matches of the same people, with the same names and faces on the Ghanaian as well as Togolese voters registers; some 2000 of which we present in the power point presentation,”

“I should note that so far, we have only completed less than 10% of the work on the Togolese register and we will begin work on comparing the Ivorian register with Ghana’s shortly and follow that with the Burkina Faso register,” Dr. Bawumia said at a News conference organised by the NPP.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia reacting to the allegations on Kasapa FM’s  expressed disappointment. According to him, he least expected such comments from Dr. Bawumia considering the calibre of person he is.

“I can pardon anyone else who puts out such allegation but not Dr Bawumiah who is a statistician with a PhD. Because of his high education he has in recent times sought to always throw dust into the eyes of ordinary Ghanaians whenever he mounts a political platform,” he said.

“This is the same man who claimed President Mahama had about 240,000 votes from abroad added to his votes to enable him win the 2012 election, but when he appeared in court during the election petition hearing he couldn’t prove any such thing. My high respect for him keeps reducing anytime he does this kind of politics, I’ll advise him to stop this or will soon lose his respect Ghanaians had for him prior to entering politics,” Mr. Asiedu Nketia added.

He indicated that all political parties always have their polling agents at voter registration centres tasked to see to it that foreigners are not registered. As such, he is doubtful about the claims by the NPP.

“At least any serious political party has its polling agents at registration centres, they challenge the nationalities of persons they suspect not to be Ghanaians, there are challenge and objection forms that are filled in such instances. All such cases will be determined by a panel and so I doubt what the NPP has put out this morning,” he stated.

The NPP is pushing an agenda to get the voters' register expunged and replaced with a new one. The party has begun garnering the support of other political parties to join them in their course.

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has so far indicated its readiness to join the NPP in this fight.
