Almost everyday since his inauguration on January 7, 2017 one head of a government institution is either sacked or resigns with the knowledge of an impending sack.

So who are those who have been the early casualties of this wind of change at Ghana's state institutions? Below is a list of the major exits since January 7.

1. Ernest Thompson - SSNIT

The Director General of Social Security and National Insurance Trust, SSNIT, Mr. Ernest Thompson was relieved of his post on January 25th 2017. He was allegedly accused of grabbing 6billion Ghana cedis housing loan less than a year to retire.

2. Madam Doris Awo Nkani - CEO, SIC

The Chief Executive Officer of the State Insurance Commission, SIC, Madam Doris Awo Nkani was also relieved of his post by President Nana Akufo Addo on January 27th 2017.

3. MMDCEs

All MMDCE’S: President Akufo-Addo issued a directive asking all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives to vacate their post with immediate effect.

In a letter signed by the president, all the MMDCEs appointed during the Mahama-led government were to hand over to their coordinating directors for further instructions.

4. Richard Anamoo - Dir. Gen, GPHA

The Director General of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), Richard A.Y Anamoo, was also asked to step aside.

Following accusations against him accusing Mr. Anamoo of misusing state funds, insisting he transferred his residence to his son, who has also used the place as a recording studio and a pub at the expense of the state.

5. Gideon Aryeequaye - CEO, Ghana Tourism Authority

Gideon Aryee Quaye  was also directed as the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority Gideon Aryeequaye to vacate his post with immediate effect by President Nana Akufo Addo.

He was to hand over to the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister- designate Catherine AfekuHe was asked to vacate his seat as  Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority not later than 5:00 pm on January 26, 2017,"

6. Dr. Stephen Opuni - CEO, COCOBOD

Dr. Stephen Opuni was also dismissed as the Chief Executive of Cocobod  In a letter dated Thursday, January 12 and signed by the president's Executive Secretary. Dr. Opuni was given up to the end of Friday, 13 January, to vacate his office

The letter said Dr Opuni “ceases to hold office as CEO of Cocobod upon assumption of office of President Nana Akufo-Addo.”

7. Alex Mould - CEO, GNPC

Alex Mould, the CEO of the National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) was also relieved of his post and now Former Kotoko Chairman, Mr. KK Sarpong takes over.

Analysis

Critics say the president should critically examine the capabilities of the bosses before showing them the exit. They argue that although they are connected to the previous governing party, if they are doing their jobs diligently then it is important they are maintained to the benefit of the country.

This even begs the question, should the heads of these institutions be political appointments in the first place?
