Organizers of the 'Let My Vote Count Alliance' have finally filed a motion to set aside an order instituted by the police to restrain them from picketing at the Electoral Commission.

LMVC demonstrators drag police to court over injunction from picketing at EC
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command had earlier on secured a court injunction banning the Let My Votes Count Alliance from picketing in the premises of the Electoral Commission.

This comes on the back of plans by the LMVCA's decision to stage a second demonstration to press home demands for a new Voter's Register for the 2016 elections, after an audit conducted by the New Patriotic Party allegedly revealed names of foreigners from neighbouring countries in the register.
But, a motion signed by a member of the group, Gifty Oware Aboagye for an application to set aside the police order has said: "The referee at the centre of the parliamentary and presidential is the EC, and as a matter of urgency, we have to deliver the petition to a representative of that body, preferably the chairman at the end of the demonstration. Their (LMVC) intended demonstration in the form of picketing involves the gathering of the demonstrators at the vicinity of the EC and the subsequent delivery of the petition which is signed by 5,000 Ghanaians to the EC. The delivery of the petition does not involve the whole mass of demonstrators walking into the vicinity of the EC but a few of the leaders of the demonstrators physically being ushered to the said premises to carry out the harmless democratic exercise".
Speaking on Accra-based Citi Fm, Convener of the Alliance, David Asante said their decision to drag the police and attorney general to court is a pure legitimate act of determination by the group to ensure that their constitutional right is protected.

"Our decision to challenge the injunction as secured by the police is not in any case an act of intransigence. We believe the police as it were just needs the legal backing of the court to stop us from accessing the premises of the EC. We also believe it is only the court that can give us the absolute backing to set aside the orders of the police", he added.
