Afari Gyan treated NDP unprofessionally - Nana Konadu

Nana Konadu says the NDP was unfairly treated by Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan

Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings

Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings has indicated that former Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan acted unprofessionally and unethical in disqualifying the National Democratic Party in the in the lead up to the 2012 general elections.

During the 2012 polls, the dreams of six political parties to contest the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections were dashed when their nomination forms were rejected by the EC at the close of nominations including the NDP.

The Chairman of the EC, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan told them that the premises of the EC were not the place for the filling of forms, and that their parties should have done that before going to the EC.

But according to Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings speaking on Accra-base Joy FM, the basis for her disqualification by the former EC boss was unprofessional and unethical.

The party subsequently went to court over the matter and obtained a ruling in their favor but could not participate in the polls.

She added that the party was unfairly treated.

"The way he treated us was unprofessional and unethical. He shouldn’t have done that. Even the way he flipped our documents on TV was unacceptable and that is why the court looked at the matter and said it was wrong and that we should have gone through," she added.

Nana Konadu, who many believed was in the presidential race mainly to orchestrate the defeat or the NDC, will now have to wait until 2016 before she can relaunch her bid.

She however disclosed that she is not the founder of the National Democratic Party.

The NDP broke from the ruling NDC because they (NDP) believed the NDC was corrupt and therefore could not abide by its ideals.

She stated that she is not the founder of the NDP as has been speculated over the years.

“I did not found it (NDP)...I had traveled so upon my return I heard of a new party and they gave the reasons for its formation so I decided to be part of it. It sounded good because they were going to do things differently on how Ghana should go. The party had better objectives to lift Ghana from poverty to a real middle income status not by words but by deeds and I wanted to be part of it”, she added.
