EC’s filing fee: democracy is not the reserve of the rich – PPP
Murtala Mohammed in an interview with Pulse.com.gh said charging GHC50, 000 and GHC10, 000 for the presidential and parliamentary nominees is “unacceptable,” urging the commission to review the charges.

The EC is charging GHC50, 000 as nomination fee for persons seeking to run for president and GHC10, 000 for parliamentary aspirants.
The decision over the fees came to light after the Inter-Party Advisory Commission (IPAC) meeting held on Thursday September 8.
Both presidential and parliamentary candidates are to pick their nomination forms from the Electoral Commission on Tuesday, September 13 and submit same between September 29 and 30, 2016.

“Parliamentarians paid a GHC1000 [in 2012]. Today they are paying 10, 000. It means there has been 1000% increase and that is unacceptable.
“With presidential, they paid GHC10, 000 [in 2012]. Today they are paying GHC50, 000. That is 500% increment and I am saying that is unacceptable because democracy is not the reserve of the rich,” he said.
“[Election] is for everybody to participate. So it is important that you don’t charge exorbitant prices for it.
“It is not because the party cannot pay but it is a principled stand. Whatever the amount they are going to charge, the PPP can afford,” he said.
Murtala Mohammed said capable people with no heavy finances could be denied the opportunity to serve their country, warning that people will resort to other means to express their anger and frustration because they cannot participate in leadership contest in the country.

“In principle you don’t have to make democracy expensive because people will resort to other means to express their frustration and anger,” he stressed. “We are making the process very expensive.”
