Mills never investigated Mahama for 'corruption' - NDC

The NPP’s Policy Adviser, Boakye Agyarko, addressing a press conference on Monday to respond to the NDC’s manifesto alleged that President Mahama’s integrity has been compromised as he was at a point investigated by the late President Mills over alleged corrupt acts.

But commenting on the matter, the National Campaign Coordinator for the NDC’s 2016 campaign, Kofi Adams, said that the NPP’s claims are only fabricated stories to tarnish the image of the President.

“One says there was an attempt to investigate, it was never investigated and this was a story told by Martin [Amidu]. Now they move it to the next level and say that he was never investigated. Investigated for what?” he asked at a press conference.

Background

The former Attorney General, Martin Amidu had in 2012 said that the late President Mills set up a Committee of Enquiry to investigate the acquisition of aircraft for the Armed Forces negotiated by then vice-President John Mahama.

The late President Mills on February 19, 2009, in his State of the Nation address, said that his government was reviewing the decision to purchase two executive Presidential jets due to the high cost involved.

President Mahama, then chairman of the Armed Forces Council, was accused of meeting officials from Brazil and negotiating the acquisition of five jets when the President appeared unaware of the transaction.

Mr Amidu indicated that even though the late President Mills subsequently set up a Committee to probe the matter, official investigations never commenced.

Commenting on the incident, Mr. Adams said that “President Mills was the President of the Republic and reserved the right to accept or reject any contract if he was not satisfied with the conditions under which it was entered into.”

“Once that [the investigations] did not happen, it meant that everybody was satisfied with the contractual agreement that was done,” Mr. Adams added.
