NPP not risking its chances in Klottey Korle - Ursula

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West stated that “I don’t think that is what the NPP is doing. We are not exactly back to square one.”

The defeated NPP parliamentary aspirant in the Klottey Korle constituency, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey has announced his decision to contest the November Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate.

He has accused the leadership of the party of thwarting his efforts of representing the NPP in 2016.

Many political commentators are predicting that his move will kill the NPP’s chances of winning the seat back from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) if efforts are not made to rope him back into the NPP fold.

She admitted that the leadership of the party did not handle the issue well saying, “there were issues with that constituency; there were challenges with the manner in which the first election was held and it was that which led Philip Addison to go to court in the first place. I agree to some extent that the party didn’t quite handle issues well from this inception of this case and it’s as if that is what has caused us Nii Noi’s decision.”

“Sometimes it’s the manner in which the party handles its disagreements which allow some of these things to happen,” she added.

Political suicide

The NPP MP was of the view that Nii Noi’s decision to contest as an independent candidate “is tantamount to political suicide.”

According to her, she would have been happy if “he [Nii Noi] hadn’t taken this decision now and had allowed tempers to cool and reason to prevail a little bit and thought through his options before deciding to do this.”

“It appears to me that he acted a little bit in the heat of the moment and that is not always the best frame of mind to be in to take such a major decision,” he remarked.
