Minister defends appointing president's daughter to serve on Creative Arts Council

Miss Akufo-Addo's appointment has drawn sharp criticism from critics of the government who have labelled the government "family and friends."

But according to the minister, the president's daughter has the right to work, adding that her credentials speak volumes.

“President’s children have a right to work. It is [in] the Constitution and they are Ghanaians by birth, by right and her credentials speak volumes,” she said on Accra-based Joy FM.

She added: The people in the industry when they heard her were mesmerized that it is not just being a daughter of a president but [she] is passionate, she is very well respected in the industry worldwide and he has the credentials to back it.”

“I think we also need to stay away from this notion of if you are a child or a relative of a leader and you are qualified you cannot be given a position.

"I need to put it and put it very firmly that this is a sector that enjoins all creative people. She is extremely qualified and I am the one to work with her and not her father."

On Wednesday, the president daughter was appointed a member of the Creative Arts Council in a private ceremony that was held in a conference room at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in Accra.

Mark Okraku Mantey, Music Producer and Programmes Manager of Hitz FM, was appointed to head the new Creative Arts Council as President.

Ghanaian actress and a member of the New Patriotic Party, Bibi Bright was also part of the three-member council as secretary.
