A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko has said that the bickering in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will end if the saints in the party increase in number.

“We need more saints in the NPP. The demons are taking over. If you have more saints, what they will do is that they can neutralise the demons to build a stronger force,” he said on Radio UniversBehind the Headlines.

According to him, the NPP is rewriting Machiavelli’s press where everybody move is seen as counterproductive.

“There seem to be much distrust in NPP and every move by any actor is seen as a calculated move to undermine some other individuals within the party. Some are literary behaving like demons. They are taking Machiavelli’s position to the absurdity levels; Machiavelli has warned that we should treat everybody as a political assassin,” Dr Aggery Darko said.

He added suggested that the experience of key actors of the party must be put to bare so that the party can reorganise itself to be a viable organisation.

“Communication is important for building of trust. Mutual respect and even listening to the other party will also help them build the trust. But when these are missing, they heap the whole issue of mistrust and further undermine any move to build that party. It should be possible for the General Secretary, Chairman and flag-bearer to harmonise in the interest of the party,” he noted.

The NPP over the past one year has been struggling to keep the peace with accusations and counter-accusation being traded among the rank and file of the party.

It would be recalled that Nana Addo at a press conference in May this year declared a one-week fast to rid the party of any demonic attack due the tensions which had arisen as a result of the murder of the party’s Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama.

Last Friday, the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko was suspended indefinitely following a petition of misconduct against him by the party’s council of elders. Despite urging Ghanaians to disregard that decision, the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo has admonished every party member to respect the decision of the National Executive Committee.

Many have argued that due to the ongoing internal wrangling within the NPP, the Ghanaian electorate is now torn between voting to retain an incompetent government and voting for a chaotic political party.
