Mahama’s contender is a “comic relief” – Bagbin

The Majority Leader says George Boateng is a joke

Alban Bagbin

The Majority Leader, Alban Bagbin has described George Boateng – the man who intends challenging President John Mahama in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries – as a “joke”.

According to him, the 45-year old former Oyarifa Branch Youth Organizer of the party should not be taken serious in his bid to challenge the president because, “He is taking Ghanaians for a ride”.

“I see it as comic relief. There is nowhere in the world that you have unlimited rights and freedoms. They are always managed… The notion that democracy is just about voting must be discounted with… I’m all for it but not the caliber of George Boateng. George Boateng cannot even entertain us. Even though I said he is a comic relief he is taking Ghanaians for a ride. He is a joke,” he said on Asempa FM.

“Ghana is not just the forerunner in achievement of independence in sub-Saharan Africa but in the democratic world we are an icon and even the developed world are learning from us. We have peace and harmony and that beats the imagination of many countries and so even though we want to open up for participation we should not be taken for granted, that anybody can just wake up and say I want to be president,” Honorable Bagbin added.

George Boateng has been in the news after he declared his intentions to contest President Mahama in the party’s November 7 primaries.

The aspirant has since been engaged in verbal articulations with some members of the party, especially Mr Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the party, who described him as having a mental disorder.

National executives of the party have ruled out the possibility of allowing him contest President Mahama, arguing that the forms he bought were draft copies.

Mr Boateng has stated that he will pick new formsfrom the party’s headquarters on Monday. However, the majority leader has asked him to rethink.

“In areas that this has happened we have had anarchy. Is not every person who is a leader and so I beg to differ… George Boateng should rethink,” he noted.
