Dr. Aggrey Darko said: “I think that there are some individuals in there who may not have the interest of the party at heart otherwise you wouldn’t expect that some of these entrenched positions will seriously culminate ultimately to the suspension of the National Chairman.”

A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Aggrey Darko has said the suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was not the cause of the party’s problems.

“I don’t think Afoko was the main problem in the NPP but of course, where we sit, sometimes we are not privy to some of the information that perhaps led to this ultimate decision by the key functionaries of the party,” he remarked.

The political science lecturer said he strongly suspects that some individuals within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are seriously working to keep the party in opposition.

In an interview on Unique FM, Dr. Aggrey Darko said: “I think that there are some individuals in there who may not have the interest of the party at heart otherwise you wouldn’t expect that some of these entrenched positions will seriously culminate ultimately to the suspension of the National Chairman.”

“I think there are some ‘demons’ in there working very hard to ensure that the party perhaps continue to remain in opposition,” he added.

The NPP over the past one year has been struggling to keep the peace with accusations and counter-accusation being traded among the rank and file of the party.

Last Friday, the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko was suspended indefinitely but despite urging Ghanaians to disregard that decision, the NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo has admonished every party member to respect the decision of the National Executive Committee.

Many have argued that due to the ongoing internal wrangling within the NPP, the Ghanaian electorate is now torn between voting to retain an incompetent government and voting for a chaotic political party.

Sharing his thoughts on this assertion, Dr. Aggrey Darko remarked that “it is not a fair assessment at all.”

He explained saying, “we have conflicts everywhere but I am not the least suggesting that if you have conflict in a party, it is normal. What I am suggesting is that it’s not as if it’s a peculiar issue and it cannot be resolved.”

Dr. Aggrey Darko stressed that the NPP will have themselves to blame “if they are unable to close their ranks and able to present a very potent force going into 2016 because there seems to be too much cleavages.”
