NDC won't protect any sitting MP - Asiedu Nketia

The NDC has set November 7, 2015 for both the presidential and parliamentary primaries

Mr Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of NDC

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Asiedu Nketia said the party will not protect any sitting Member of Parliament during the upcoming primaries.

According to him, the best protection for an MP is hard work and effectiveness. “Show that you have worked hard and that will be your protection”, Mr Nketia said.

Speaking on Atinka FM Friday morning, he said the sitting MPs must prove to the delegates that they worked hard and served his constituents well, adding that this will guarantee their return to parliament in 2016.

“We don’t have any protection for any sitting MP; the protection of the masses is the best protection for the MPs. If you are afraid that many people will vote against you, then who will vote for you when you are elected as the parliamentary candidate,?” he asked

On the issue of Metropolitan, Municipal, or a District Chief Executives who want to unseat sitting MPs, Mr Nketia, added that “DCEs are with the grassroots so they can canvas for votes from the grassroots level to unseat a sitting MP but we cannot use the party laws to disqualify a DCE”.

According to Mr Asiedu Nketia, a DCE who wants to challenge what the party describes as a “star MP” must step down first.

However, filing of nomination forms will open on August 27 through to September 10, 2015.

Women and disabled persons who wish to contest the parliamentary primaries are to pay 50 percent of the fixed filling fee of 10, 000 cedis.

GH¢ 50,000 will be paid by male presidential aspirants whilst in line with the party’s social democratic gender sensitive credentials, has offered a 50 per cent rebate to female aspirants.

The decision was reached at a crucial meeting by NEC of the party Thursday afternoon.

The move, according to Mr. Nketia was to encourage as many women and disabled people who would want to contest to pick forms.
