DCEs to be elected under NPP govt - Bawumia

Speaking on the 2016 Budget statement presented by Finance Minister Seth Terkper last month, Dr. Bawumia said election of DCEs would improve Ghana's decentralisation policy.

The opposition New Patriotic Party, NPP would elect the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) when voted into power in 2016, Vice presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has said.

Speaking on the 2016 Budget statement presented by Finance Minister Seth Terkper last month, Dr. Bawumia said election of DCEs would improve transparency and Ghana's decentralisation policy.

There have been calls that parliament should consider reviewing the relevant sections of the constitution to ensure that Ghanaians elect all members of the district assemblies and DCEs to reduce the high rate of poverty in the country.

Recently, a survey carried out by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) indicated that majority of Ghanaians favour the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives against the current practice of appointment by the President.

The survey which was carried out in September 2014 in 72 districts across the country showed that 69.4 per cent of respondents wanted to go to the polls to elect their own local leaders.

Meanwhile, most local governance experts, political analysts and some politicians believed that the appointment of DCE to the Assemblies will enable the state progress as expected by all citizenry.
