EC has not done a good job - David Agbee

According to him, the election management body failed to communicate effectively with the various security agencies to avert some of the challenges faced by some security personnel who could not find their names during the special voting exercise.

Checks from polling stations across the country on Sunday showed that registered voters who submitted their names to take part in the special voting exercise were turned away again because their names were not on the register.

The EC set Sunday for the continuation of the special voting exercise after similar challenges of missing names were recorded on the first day of the exercise, which fell on Thursday, December 1, 2016.

But the situation did not change this Sunday as many special voters did not find their names, with the EC subsequently agreeing that such persons could vote on December 7.

Many have lashed out at the EC for the hiccups, but the Commission has said it should not be blamed as it worked with names submitted to them by the various institutions involved.

However, Mr David Agbee believes the EC has no basis shifting blames on the matter, as it should have communicated well with the various stakeholders well ahead of the election.

“They [EC] should understand that election management system, we have stakeholders, and stakeholders and security agencies are very powerful. They have to ensure that we have peace at any polling station. So drafting election management security architecture, they need to understand clearly that the safety of electoral officers, safety of every citizen at the polling station is very important.

“And so they should have known better by engaging the security agencies long ago. Why do we have what we call electoral security taskforce? Electoral security taskforce are also supposed to collaborate with the EC so that some of these things will be ironed out. But they do not engage the security agencies very well and the security agencies are also expecting that electoral commission will do a good job. It cannot be done that way,” he told TV3 news.

“And so going round and monitoring the election, I felt so sad that people are not doing what they are supposed to do. People who are paid with state resources should know better. Most of us are not happy with what the EC has done in a short time,” Mr Agbee lamented.
