Fix the nation and leave us alone - Asabee to NDC

Mr. Asamoah Boateng assured the voting public not to lose hope in the NPP because the party is ready to wrestle power from the NDC.

A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Stephen Asamoah Boateng had advised the government to focus on fixing the challenges facing the nation rather than poking its nose in the affairs of the NPP.

The former Local Government Minister under the Kufuor administration served notice to the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) that “elections are fought on the performance of the government and not on the performance of the opposition party so the government must sit up and do its work well because that is what people will be voting on.”

The NPP has been grappling with internal party issues which have led to the murder of two of its members as well as the suspension of the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and some other constituency chairmen.

Some have blamed the party flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo for allegedly instigating the violence and troubles within the party.

In an interview on Radio Ghana’s Behind the News on Monday, Mr. Asamoah Boateng argued that critics of the NPP constantly blame Nana Addo do so because he is the leader as well as the “target of the party is government.”

He indicated that Nana Addo is dealing with the issues “as much as he can and I think we must understand that it shouldn’t just be reduced to the flagbearer…so we should try and take some of the responsibility from him and deal with it. We need to get a solution through all quarters and not just the flagbearer.”

We are ready

“People need to understand that we are ready and we already feel that we can do it…and I will say that people should not lose hope especially party members on the ground.”

According to him, the assertion that voters are losing confidence in the NPP is untrue but rather, the party’s internal matters have become “free for our political opponents to use it instead of dealing with the problems of the country.”

He added that the NPP is an organization determined to win elections and “I think we must understand that within ourselves, we need to love each other, appreciate each other and respect each other and also move in as a unit. So yes, we can resolve it and I can say that we will be ready for the elections. We are in trying times and I am very happy we all appreciate that we need to discuss things.”

He said the nation has about 12 months to go to the polls therefore; the NPP has time to resolve its issues and begin rigorous campaigning.

“I can see real campaigning about six to four months to the elections but there are a few things we need to do on the ground. Yes we do have internal issues but I will not say it is something we cannot deal with. This is an organisation that has withstood a lot of pressures before and we are not happy with what is going on…but we are dealing with it.”
