Fatau Dauda eyeing no. 1 spot

“I am going there [the Africa Cup of Nations] to fight for a place in the starting team.”

The newly signed Enyimba goalie was handed a late call-up to the national team after Adam Larsen Kwarasay pulled out of the squad due to illness. Dauda was subsequently named in Ghana’s final 23-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

And the former Ashanti Gold man says although he feels sorry for his compatriot’s inability to join the squad, he will take the opportunity to fight his way into the first team.

Fatau Dauda was the undisputed first choice between the sticks for Ghana between 2013 and 2015 – being in goal for Ghana at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil – but has since lost his spot to Razak Braimah.

He told Angel FM: “I am very sad for my brother Adam Kwarasey, I was preparing to go to Nigeria and join my team for the pre-season when I had a call to come back to the Black Stars.”

“I am not just going there to be a standby goalkeeper; I am going there to fight for a place in the starting team.

“I know all the goalkeepers are good so I have to work hard to secure a starting place.”

The Black Stars are paired with Uganda, Egypt and Mali in group B and will kickstart their campaign against the cranes on January 17, 2017.
