Jebet smashes steeplechase world record

Olympic champion Ruth Jebet broke the world record by over six seconds in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Diamond League.

Olympic champion Ruth Jebet broke the world record by over six seconds in the women's 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Diamond League meet.

Jebet, who narrowly missed out on breaking the previous world record of eight minutes and 58.81 seconds when she won gold for Bahrain at Rio 2016, smashed that mark as she claimed a dominant victory with a time of 8:52.78.

The 19-year-old said: "I tried many times to beat the world record, and today we decided to push each other to go for a good time.

"The pacemaker was very strong as she was in the Olympics. I was not expecting such a big difference with the record. I think I finished my season today."

Renaud Lavillenie banished some of the memories of his painful defeat by Thiago Braz da Silva in Brazil with triumph in the pole vault.

Lavillenie, who was booed by the Brazilian fans at the Olympics, had the home crowd on his side this time around and promptly delivered, winning with a vault of 5.93 metres.

Dafne Schippers, beaten to gold by Elaine Thompson in Rio, was victorious in the 200m, while Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon had to settle for second in the 1500m as Laura Muir set a world-lead time of 3:55.22

Ben Youssef Meite matched the time of 9.96 seconds he ran in the final in Rio to win the 100m, Alfred Kipketer triumphed in the 800m and a world-lead time of 7:28.19 was set by Yomif Kejelcha in the men's 3000m.

Kendra Harrison claimed victory in the 100m hurdles, Natasha Hastings won the 400m and Nicholas Bett narrowly beat Kerron Clement in the 400m hurdles.

Two more Olympic champions, Sandra Perkovic and Ruth Beitia, delivered in the discus and high jump respectively, but Tianna Bartoletta could not repeat her Rio heroics in the long jump, finishing seventh as Ivana Spanovic took the win.

Meanwhile, Tom Walsh won the shot put, Chris Carter was victorious in the triple jump and Jakub Vadlejch came through in the javelin as Olympic champion Thomas Rohler finished third.
