The youth at Akoto Lante clashed with the police to stop them from arresting Bukom Banku
Isaac Aryee, a former national welterweight champion was allegedly knocked down whilst driving a motorbike by a car driven by one officer Aikins of the Mamprobi Police on Wednesday afternoon on the Mortuary Road in Accra.
According to eyewitnesses, the Police officer drove away without attending to the injured boxer who was in critical condition until Aryee was saved by a good samaritan who rushed him to the Korlu-Bu Teaching Hospital.
The boxer who is still on admission suffered a broken neck but the Police were apparently not happy with comments made by Bukom Banku on radio accusing the officer for his hit-and-run antics.
An army of seven officers led by the Commander, Asare and including the accused Aikins stormed Akoto Lante where Kamoko resides to arrest him but were fiercely resisted by the youth who refused to let the renowned boxer go with the Police.
Sensing danger, the six officers jumped in their police car and drove away, leaving Commander Asare behind who had to go back in a taxi.
In a related development, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) led by their president, Peter Zwennes have paid a visit to Isaac Aryee in hospital and are working with the Police to ensure justice in the matter.
"We just left Korle-Bu heading towards the Police Station. The Commander followed us to the scene and to the hospital and now we are going back to the Police station," GBA Communications Director, Naa Darkuah Dodoo confirmed.
