Former heavyweight champion Frank Bruno said he has "no choice" but to resume his boxing career at the age of 54 as he struggles with mental health issues.

The Brit was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2003 and was interviewed on ITV This Morning's show on Monday to discuss the problems he has faced.

Bruno's last fight was 20 years ago, but the Londoner stated that he wants to make an unlikely return to the ring.

He said: "I'm going to the gym all the time, working hard. I've got to get back into boxing, to get this out of my system because I don't want to end up in Broadmoor Hospital [a high-security psychiatric facility]."

He added: "Is that a good idea? I haven't got a choice. I train every day, I get Eddie Hearn – who is supposed to be a promoter – saying Anthony Joshua would knock me out in two rounds, I'm not even dead.

"I can't sit down and let these so-called promoters say that their guy would beat me in two rounds when I'm alive."
