George Afriyie: Commission’s report about me was bogus

The Vice Chairman of the GFA has down played the report of the Commission of Inquiry that influenced government to issue a white paper that ends his job as Black Stars management committee chairman, when enforced.

George Afriyie has rubbished the recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry into Ghana’s shambolic FIFA World Cup participation in Brazil that enabled the President of the Republic of Ghana through the Attorney to issue a white refraining him from any future national team job.

George Afriyie, the chairman of the Black Stars management committee was one of the non-Black Stars management committee members who received part of the appearance fees shared to the playing and management committee members of the Black Stars, during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Following Ghana’s poor show in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil amidst player agitation over delay in the payment of appearance fees that compelled the players to boycott training session prior to their final group game against Portugal, the government of Ghana after the mundial set up a Presidential Commission of Inquiry and according to George Afriyie who refused to state the actual amount he received as appearance when he appeared before the Commission in Camera, he was told that he was a non-target witness, so there was no need for his lawyer to back him in answering the questions put before him.

However, the Commission’s recommendation to government captured him as a target witness, which contravenes with article 82 of the constitution of Ghana.

“If you look at article 82 of Ghana’s constitution which states when a commission is formed with all the powers vested in them to carry out their job, they need to define what the purpose of the person appearing before them is, whether the person is a target witness or a non-target witness.

“In both cases you need to give the chance to a lawyer. If I use myself as an example I appeared before the Commission of Inquiry on more than three occasions and one of them I appeared in Camera in the company of Mr. Thaddeus Sory as my lawyer. My lawyer was told they were going to have a normal conversation with me, so when you finish your work and you write any report about me, the laws of this land will do justice to indicate whether what you did was wrong or write,” George Afriyie told Otec FM.
