Black Stars defender explains middle finger gesture

The gesture came in for a lot of criticism, but Gyimah insists it was all fun and games.

Edwin Gyimah has finally explained the finger gesture towards George Maluleka during the Soweto Derby earlier this season.

The Ghanaian defender was seen showing Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Maluleka the middle finger as the teams walked out onto the field in late January.

“George is my friend from our time at SuperSport and we talk a lot, but in the Derby I believe that you don’t need to smile, even if someone is your friend,” the Orlando Pirates man says in the latest edition ofKICK OFF magazine.

“It is time for business, but George always wants to get into my mind by saying crazy things and telling me that I must smile and laugh instead of putting on a straight face.

“It wasn’t my intention to respond with that finger gesture. I wasn’t even angry. It is just harmless fun between two friends.”
