Meet the Ghana Premier League's MVPs over the last decade

Have they topped or flopped since their win? See how the Ghana Premier League's MVPs from the last 10 years have fared

Interestingly, none of them went on to secure a career with the Black Stars, while some disappeared from the radar of top flight football, playing for second tier sides.

Some, though, have not made a mess of themselves at all.

Here is Pulse Sports' report on the Ghana Premier League's Most Valuable Players (MVPs) over the last 10 years.

Eric Bekoe – 2007/08

Bekoe was the star of the Bashiru Hayford’s vintage Kotoko team of the 2007/08 season – also featuring the likes of Samuel Inkoom, Harrison Afful, Emmanuel Osei Kuffour, Francis Akwaffo and Daniel Nii Adjei. His 17 goals in 23 games helped the Kotoko team to the league title and also earned him the goal king award. At the end of the season, he beat of competition from teammate Harrison Afful and Heart of Lions striker Dominic Adiyiah to be crowned the league’s Most Valuable Player.

The high flying Bekoe landed a big money move to Egypt’s Petrojet, where he spent three years before returning to Ghana with Berekum Chelsea in 2012. After struggling with injuries amid a largely underwhelming return, he played a season for Sekondi Hasaacas in the 2015/16 season, where he managed 8 goals in 20 games.

Where is he now?

The 30-year-old currently plays at Egyptian second tier side Kafr Elsheikh SC.

Joseph Ato Bissah – 2008/2009

While still a 17-year-old, Joseph Ato Bisaah took the league by storm from midfield, putting in sterling performances, and although his club Sekondi Hasaacas did not win the league, he still picked up the MVP award with ease, beating Latif Salifu of Liberty Professionals and Idrissu Yahaya of Kessben FC (now Medeama SC).

Where is he now?

Bissah currently plays for FC Tanta, debutants in the Egyptian Premier League, after spending the last few years with AshantiGold, with whom he won the 2014/15 Ghana Premier League title.

All is not lost for the former Hasaacas captain though, as he still has the time to live up to the potential he was hailed to have: he is still only 26.

Mahatma Otoo – 2009/10 and 2012/13

Mahatma Otoo has the distinction of having two stints on the podium as the Ghana Premier League’s best player.

As an 18-year-old, he became the league’s MVP in 2010 playing for Hearts of Oak, a season after being named the Most Promising Player.

Three years later and he was back on top with even better credentials – he captained Hearts of Oak and ended up as the league’s top scorer with 20 goals, wrapping up a second MVP award.

Otoo left Hearts for Norway’s Sogndal and has since been largely off the radar, struggling with form and injuries.

After three years in Norway, he moved to Ümraniyespor in the Turkish second division, where he currently plays.

Mumuni Abubakar – 2010/11

Playing for New Edubiase, midfielder Mumuni Abubakar shone in the 2010/11 Ghana Premier League season with his box to box tenacity and was named MVP.

Fast forward six years later and Abubakar is now only still 23, having struggled to make a mark for himself in South Africa, where he has played for Sundowns, Black Leopards and Vasco Da Gama and Stellenbosch FC.

Daniel Nii Adjei – 2011/12

The stylish Nii Adjei was the kingpin of coach Maxwell Konadu’s Kotoko team that won the 2012 Ghana Premier League title. His grace and flair from midfield saw him beat Emmanuel Baffour of New Edubiase – who had top scored in the top flight with an impressive 21 goals – to the MVP title.

Where is he now?

Adjei moved to Congolese juggernaut TP Mazembe in 2013, where he has won two league titles, a CAF Champions League and a CAF Confederations Cup.

Not doing badly at all.

Augustine Okrah – 2013-14

The fast, skilful Okrah emerged from an unlikely club (Bechem United) to grab the Ghana Premier League top scorer award with 16 goals. This feat earned the left-footed play maker the MVP award.

Where is he now?

Like has been the tradition, Okrah rode on his MVP fame to land a lucrative deal at Sudanese giants Al Merreikh, but not before a short, uneventful loan at Swedish side BK Hacken.

Like Nii Adjei, Okrah seems to have escaped the doomed fate on MVPs and is doing well, mesmerising Sudanese fans with his explosive attacking and goals.

He is currently arguably one of the best players in Sudan, with a cult following to boot.

Eric Opoku – 2014/15

Opoku proved to be the lifeblood of AshantiGold as they fought off competition from regional rivals Asante Kotoko to win the 2014/15 Ghana Premier League title.

His versatility powered AshGold to their first league title in 19 years, and this hard work didn’t go unnoticed: he was named the league’s MVP at the end of the season, beating Kofi Owusu of Berekum Chelsea, who had struck the back of the net 19 times in a prolific season.

Where is he now?

Nicknamed ‘Hello Kwaku’, the 25-year-old left the Obuasi-based club after five years of service to sign for Ethiopian top flight side Dedebit FC in February this year.

Latif Blessing – 2015/16

Latif Blessing proved head and shoulders above every player in Ghana in the 2015/16 season, stealing headlines with his prodigious talent, which not only consisted of his dribbling, but his goals too.

There were 17 of them in 21 games, and it helped him bag the MVP award.

Where is he now?

The 20-year-old got his painfully predictable move abroad in January 2017, signing with Sporting City Kansas in the American Major League Soccer (MLS).

He is now on a flexible loan deal at Kansas' feeder second tier side Swope Park Rangers.
