Odartey Lamptey named among FIFA U-17 World Cup legends

The former Ghana international has been recognised by FIFA in his role in the 1991 U-17 World Cup in Italy.

Odartey was the talisman of the Ghana’s Black Starlets team that won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Italy and he was subsequently named the player of the tournament for his exceptional display.

His play was lauded by Edson Arantes Do Nascimento, popularly known in football cycle as Pele and other greats of the beautiful game.

Other notable players who made the list were Sergio Santamaria of Spain who went on to play for FC Barcelona, USA veteran Landon Donovan, France Florent Sinama Pongolle, Cesc Fabregas currently of Chelsea and Ghanaian-born former USA international Freddy Adu.

Former Manchester United midfielder Anderson, Germany and Real Madrid star Toni Kroos and Kelechi Iheanacho of Nigeria were all named in the list.

Lamptey would later play for Ghana at all other levels-U-20, U-23 and the Black Stars.
