Ex-Ghana captain throws back to playing days

Ashanti Gold head coach reflects on his days with the senior national team on social media.

The former Black Stars skipper posted a picture of himself in an Addidas yellow branded shirt on the pitch.

The picture goes back to his old days as a Black Stars player while featuring for Ghana in the African Cup of Nations.

Charles Akonnor started out as a 20-year-old at 1994 African Cup of Nations.

He rose through the ranks in 1996, 1998 and finally captained the side in the 2000 edition which was co-hosted by Ghana/Nigeria.

Akonnor retired from professional football in February 2009 before coaching Sekondi Eleven Wise, Accra Hearts of Oak and Dreams FC.

In April 2017, Akunnor was named as Head Coach of his teenage club Ashanti Gold.

Akonnor played for the Obuasi-based side through the years of 1990 to 1992 before making the move to Europe to sign for Fortuna Cologne.
