Raphael Benitez has improved my game – Christian Atsu  

The Magpies winger says his club coach has been behind his early season form.

The 25-year-old recorded his first Premier League goal on Saturday after opening the scoring in the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Stoke City.

Atsu played over 30 games for Raphael Benitez’s side as the won the Championship to gain promotion into the English topflight, and was subsequently rewarded with a three year deal following the expiration of his loan deal from Chelsea.

The Ghana international has since been a mainstay in the Newcastle United first team and played a major role as the club recorded its third straight league win of the season.

The former Porto and Vitesse Arhem man says he is happy with his debut goal, but was quick to add that his early season form is down to the impact of his manager.

“I am very happy the team won and also happy to get my first Premier League goal,” Atsu is quoted as saying via the club's official website.

“Three wins in a row is very good for the team.

“Rafa is always telling me to use my speed to run in behind the defence if I want to assist or score more goals and it has shown a lot.

“I think with Rafa, I have improved a lot, I have seen it for myself and a lot of people are also seeing it.

“So he is very important to me and I also listen to him very attentively because he is a very good coach.

“I try to work hard every day in training, try to prove to him I want to be in the starting eleven because others are also waiting for the opportunity."
